3 Natural Allergy Remedies That Work

Spring is a beautiful time of the year. To me, it symbolizes mother nature’s celebration of life with flowers, grass and trees revitalized by the warm weather. Unfortunately, many can’t enjoy this gift of nature due to disruptive symptoms such as sniffly nose, watery itchy eyes and throat — common symptoms of seasonal allergy, which makes the day-to-day more challenging than it needs to be! The cause is an over-sensitized immune response. Allow me to share some natural ways to manage your allergy symptoms.
Take Quercetin As A Natural Antihistamine
How does quercetin work?
Quercetin is a flavonol that has potent antioxidant properties that’s found in onions, apples, blueberries and leafy greens. One impressive quality of quercetin is its ability to calm the body’s immune response to allergens. When plants burst into life during their growing season, they release microscopic pollen particles into the air we breathe. When the pollen comes into contact with our immune cell-lined membranes in the eyes and respiratory system, an overactive immune system identifies these particles as foreign pathogen, causing our immune cells to release histamine, which opens our capillaries to allow our immune cells to fend off the perceived threat, causing irritation and the overproduction of mucus.
How to take quercetin?
An adult dosage of 500-600 mg of quercetin twice a day for 3 weeks works well to help many clients keep their allergy symptoms at bay. This flavonol/potent antioxidant works by balancing our immune response: quercetin stabilizes histamine-containing mast cells while boosting our immune system against viral infections.
Clear Up Your Nasal With A Kettle of Nettle
How does nettle help with allergy symptoms?
Blocked sinus and post-nasal drip is a common challenge faced by many allergy sufferers. It may sound counter-intuitive, but this plant actually contains histamines, along with mood-boosting serotonin, and brain-supporting acetylcholine. These plant chemicals works by modulating inflammatory receptors to produce an anti-histamine effect.
How to take nettle for allergies?
If you are wondering how much nettle to take for allergies? Generally capsules contain 400mg of the dried herb and they are usually taken twice daily. I personally enjoy the fresh earthy flavour of Nettle Leaf Tea (found at our herb bar) and find it’s quite effective to help clear up the symptoms. This traditional herbal wisdom has been tested by many clinical trials over the years. It’s a economical way to get the stuffy nose under control.
Reduce Gut Inflammation
What’s the root cause of seasonal allergy?
As a holistic nutritionist, I always take clients further by addressing the root cause rather than just getting symptoms under control. 70% of our immune cells live in our gut, therefore building solid gut health plays a big role in reinforcing healthy immune responses. Here are some tools I often use in combination to help my clients fast track their gut-healing process.
Restore
This earth mineral extract supports the integrity of the cells in our gut lining by blocking toxins and digestive food proteins from entering our blood stream. Our symbiotic relationship with minerals in healthy soil is key in protecting our gut health and immunity. Sadly for most of us living the busy urban life, it’s logistically difficult to enjoy an organically grown vegetable plucked straight from uncontaminated, mineral-rich soil. This supplement helps our gut cells re-establish the connection with healthy soil by introducing bacterial metabolites to reinforces the natural barrier, our gut lining, against toxins and inflammation.
Probiotic Garden of Life 30 B
The next step is establishing an additional layer of protecting to your gut lining. According to the Human Microbiome Project, 2-3% of our body weight comes from the bacteria that populate every single section of our digestive tract. This layer of beneficial bacteria act as a shield to keep pathogen and inflammation at bay. They also produce the feel-good molecule serotonin for our brain and product nutrients for our body. For the allergy season, it’s good to add a potent dose of probiotic to your daily routine to build healthy gut flora and regulate inflammatory response of the immune system.
GI Fortify
This delicious powder tastes amazing in oatmeal recipes and smoothies. It provides fuel for healthy gut cells and herbs that soothe the gut lining to promote healing.
