ACM on OAS Washington Resolution

Statement by the ACM on the adoption of the OAS resolution on the strengthening of the hemispheric human rights system

March 27, 2013 The Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers (ACM) welcomes the recent decision by Member States of the Organisation of American States (OAS) to preserve conditions under which the independence of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and its rapporteurships, including the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, is maintained.

The OAS, at an Extraordinary General Assembly held in Washington DC on March 22, 2013, debated and unanimously adopted a resolution which, among other things, preserves access of the office of the Special Rapporteur to voluntary financial contributions from “member states, observer states, and other institutions … in the framework of the 2010-2015 Guidelines of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the 2011-2015 Strategic Plan of the IACHR.”
